Thank you for subscribing and following me along this journey. Feeling only slightly intimidated by this intro post and what it “should” include so I figure, oh yeah, let me go ahead and introduce myself (which you very well probably know who I am already):
Hi! I’m Sam Cohen (she/they) ^^^ I’m a Portland OR based artist/animator/motion designer (yeahhh i tend to where a lot of hats, all of which i think i look rlly hawt in, see pic ;)). I’ve been living in Portland since 2014, I have an MFA from the University of Oregon which brought me out to the west coast back in 2011 and a BFA from SUNY New Paltz (yep og a new yorka, eyyyyy I’m walkin here!!).
I've done a lot of experimental animation and video in my art practice and decided in late 2020 that I wanted to really learn the ins and outs of after effects so in 2021-2022 I took some online classes and became a motion designer (think graphic design and animation and slap em together!). It’s been a long journey and I’m still learning new animation techniques all the time! I love it, but also, I love movies, and music, and visual art, and tv shows, and podcasts, and books, and animation, so I felt a newsletter was a perf place to talk and share all this sentimental media I’m consuming on a daily basis as a way to take things in at a slower pace, maybe even dive deeper. I also thought for folks who are interested in animation this could be a place I can share behind the scenes, WIP, and techniques/tutorials I’m watching/trying to learn. Annnnddd you can follow me as I take on my new expensive hobby: filming on my grandpa’s 8mm movie camera (which I accidentally bought super 8 film for thinking that “yes this is a super 8 camera” only later to find out from my coworker that no it needs 8mm film not super 8 film and that there’s 1 supplier online I can find of thus far that makes 8mm film, but idk now that I have super 8 film I think I’m gonna buy a super 8 camera??? more on this later lol).
Look out for my first post later this week …..over and out,
<3 sam
